IRA: The Hunger Games

This is a really good book so far, it is about a society that rose from the ashes of America, it doesn't say how America fell but it did.  The main character Katniss lives in District 12 out of 12.  She lives on the extremely poor side of town and has to hunt (hunting is forbidden) to keep her family alive.  Every year the Capitol forces them to enter a contest which is battle to the death.  No one likes it but they have to.  Your name is entered based on your age and how many times you have accepted the tesserae (meaning food rations for the year).  This year katniss's sister was chosen even though the odds were against her getting chosen, but Katniss says that she will take the place of her in the games, even though it is suicide.  She says good by to her family and is currently on the train toward the capitol for the games.
Two things I want to talk about to describe it, 1) Katniss volenteered to go which is a first for this district, she is very brave and is probably one of the best qualified for the games because she is used to killing animals and hunting.  2) The tesserae is a cruel joke put forth by the Capitol, it forces the porrest to put their names in since they can't afford food.  It is a way for them to try to keep the rich alive and destroy the poor that no one really cares about.  Katniss's friend Gale is 18 and was eligible for the last time this year and had his name in the bowl a total of like 48 times because he had to accept rations for his entire family of five.  Katniss had her's in 26 time's because she accepted rations for her family of three, and Prim only had her's in once and she still managed to get chosen.

  1. Sounds like a cruel dystopia, and a twisted way to use food rations. Do they say why hunting is illegal? I may have to look into the books for myself.
