IRA: Volt: Furlough

The short story Furlough I really didn't get, it is about a man that is walking a lady through the counrty to go meet up with her boyfriend.  She asks him many questions and they talk about when is the guy going to ask her to marry him, and about his pet bird.  He seems like a nice guy and the girl offers to get him a date with a girl she knows.  Then it gets weird.  Once they arrive to the barn the guy has been worried about the corn which has been moving around which wasn't normal.  They open the barn door and right infront of them is a deer in a dress with a wedding veil on!!! Messed up right!  The lady takes off running, I think they are going to kill her but it never says.  All around a messed up story that I just didn't get, and their is no sparknotes for this book to help me get the underlying themes of it.
